Photo of KWS Rangers Ranked Among Best Worldwide

-

  • A photo featuring two rangers attached to Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is officially one of Time Magazine‘s best photos of  the year.

Taken by photojournalist Ed Ram on March 6, 2022, the photo features two KDF rangers pouring water on a sedated giraffe they had just been saved from being killed by poachers.

Ram snapped the photo in Garissa with its caption indicating that the endangered animal risked being killed either by poachers or predators if the rangers did not save it in time.

“Kenya Wildlife Service rangers pour water over a giraffe they rescued and sedated just outside of Garissa on March 6. The giraffe had been caught in a snare set by poachers and, without help, would likely have been killed soon by humans or predators,” read the caption in time.

Time Magazine explained that it selected the 100 images to show that 2022 was a different year. The operation was spearheaded by a team of eight photo-editors.

“Not every photo displays profound change: images from the Westminster Dog Show, now in its 146th year, are frequently included on this annual list.

“But many capture a familiar scene that’s also unlike anything that’s come before,” read the explanation in part.

Ram is a seasoned photojournalist who operates from Nairobi as well as Kyiv.

He has previously worked for the BBC, National Geographic and AFP among other highly-esteemed global media organisations.

His website, which details a body of his impressive work, shows that he documented Nairobi Expressway since its construction began all the way to its completion.

According to Pulitzer Center, the Nairobi-based journalist has also produced online videos.

He holds a master’s in photojournalism and documentary photography from London College of Communication.
