“A tough hike but worth every step.”

Those are the words of a hiker who has been to the Elephant Hill inside the Aberdare Forest where the FlySax aircraft crashed.

Located on the Southern end of the Aberdare Ranges, about 90km north of Nairobi, Elephant Hill is an ideal location for a day hike especially if you’re preparing for the more challenging Mt Kenya or Mt Kilimanjaro climbs.

Hiking at the hill is not for the faint-hearted as depicted by the reviews of those who have taken up the challenge.

“I went on a day hike with my husband to Elephant Hill. We were told it was a beginners level hike and no preparation was required. The fact is that is it very very tough,” said Camila L on global online travel advisory website, Trip Advisor.

Lives up to its name

“This is one hike that lives up to its name “ELEPHANT HILL” for an elephant kind of challenge,” remarked another reviewer.

The terrain, a hiker noted, is quite tough but there are bamboos to hold on to to avoid sliding down. Temperatures, on the other hand, are at freezing point so heavy clothing is recommended.

While a number of climbers may end up not reaching the peak, they still recommend taking up the challenge owing to the amazing views of the exotic vegetation and wildlife.

The FlySax-operated Cesna C208 craft went missing on Tuesday evening as it headed to Jomo Kenyatta airport in the capital Nairobi.

The plane’s wreckage was later discovered on Thursday with all 10 people on board confirmed dead.

Kenya has arrested 109 Tanzanians for conducting illegal activities in the country, sparking fears of a fresh diplomatic row.

The Kenya
Navy on Saturday arrested 109 Tanzanians for illegal fishing within the
country’s territorial waters in the Indian Ocean.

The
Tanzanian fishermen were seized at Shimoni, a port village in southeastern
Kenya near the border with Tanzania and were presented before a court in Kwale
County on Monday.

They were
remanded after they failed to raise a cash bail of Ksh20,000 ($200) each
according to Lunga Lunga deputy county deputy commissioner Mr Josphat Biwott.

Lunga
Lunga Member of Parliament, Khatib Mwashetani, however, came to their defence
and appealed for the fishermen’s release.

Speaking
at Kwale Baraza Park during the World Environment Day on Tuesday, the
legislator said some of the fishermen arrested lived in the country and urged
Deputy President William Ruto to intervene fearing a diplomatic row with
Tanzania will unfold if the fishermen are held up.

“Those
who were arrested are our brothers and we share a lot in common because most of
the people living in Shimoni depend on fishing for their livelihood,” he said.

Kenya and
Tanzania have had a series of diplomatic and trade disputes that sour relations
between the two neighbours.

The two
countries are currently embroiled in a bittersweet row.

Kenya has
issued Tanzania with a 30-day ultimatum to allow Kenyan-made confectionery
products into their country or risk Tanzanian goods being blocked from entering
Kenya.

This is
after Tanzania and Uganda last month slapped Kenyan made sweets, juice, ice
cream and chewing gum with a 25 per cent import duty citing the use of imported
industrial sugar in the goods.

In
January this year, Tanzania deported over 100 aliens including 71 Kenyans for
being in the country illegally according to Kilimanjaro Immigration Office.

Earlier
this year, the two countries in a bid to reduce conflicts began an exercise to
mark the boundary by replacing dilapidated and missing beacons and developing a
vista along the common border.

The
Kenya-Tanzania border is shared among communities from both sides and there has
been cross-border business, agriculture and cattle grazing, especially by
Maasai herders.

East African Cables (EA Cables) has called on the Kenyan government to crackdown on look-a-like substandard cables from China, which it says exposes consumers to risks of fire and poor performance.

Michael Waweru, the listed firm’s chairman, said the counterfeit products are endangering its regional investment by flooding its key markets in East Africa.

“Discuss with the Government of China measures to be taken to stop Chinese industries from flooding Kenya and the EAC with substandard products that have put our products in disrepute,” read part of a letter addressed to Kenya’s Foreign Affairs secretary Monica Juma.

Diplomatic intervention

Mr Waweru said increased seizures of substandard cables across the region bearing its logo showed a need for a government-to-government diplomatic intervention.

He added that hundreds of jobs at their two manufacturing plants in Kenya and Tanzania as well as in their branded distribution networks across Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan were now in jeopardy as China-made cables had flooded the market.

Last week, a group of Chinese exhibitors were arrested at a Nairobi exhibition displaying China-made electrical cables bearing EA Cables name and logo.

In a letter addressed to Ms Mohamed and copied to Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala, the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua informed the former PS that she had not been considered for re-appointment.

Time To Get Nairobi Governor Official Residence Just Like Other Counties

The President has State House, The DP has Official Residence in Karen, the Ambassadors have their Embassy Residences, Foxes have their dens and Birds have nests, but *where is the Governor of Nairobi County supposed to lay his head for the night?*

Where can you *go see Nairobi Govenor after the dark?* Where can Nairobi Govenor host a Formal County Dinner? Where can County Dignitaries be received in the evening? Where can Nairobi County Executive to call official home after 5:00PM?

Many were protesting when *Governor Sonko went to his rural Mua Hills Home* after his personal Nairobi Home Residence was sabotaged by cartels. So why not get an official home for the Governor where we as Nairobians can go offer him security in case his life is under threat?

True, Governor *Sonko may be too modest to demand* an Official Residence. It will even likely be opposed by cartels and others as unnecessary waste, but is it? I believe the idea of an *Official Nairobi Governor’s Residence* is long overdue.

Surely, it may cost us a couple of millions. But I think *it will compensate in the savings* on hotel lounges hiring costs. And we certainly need a *unifying symbol* of the Sovereignty of Nairobi County Residents as vested in their Governor.

We can *start by hiring a good and befitting Residence right away.* Long term we should put up one maybe along Eastern or Southern By-Pass or Mathare South (Muthaiga) so that even Eastlands can boast hosting power.

EXPOSED: LIST Governors and MPs, And PS To Be Arrested Over Alleged Corruption Charges

Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji is set to decide whether to arrest and prosecute two Governors, one former Governor and two sitting Principal Secretaries.

The DPP is also reviewing evidence to charge a sitting and a former MP for abuse of office and misappropriation of CDF funds, two commissioners of independent commissions, and directors of various government institutions.

EACC chairman Eliud Wabukala and CEO Halake Waqo yesterday told the Senate committee on Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights that they had recommended three sitting governors and one who served between 2013 and 2017 to be charged with abuse of office, economic crimes, and diversion of public resources.

“These are not the petty corruption files but they are all serious files which have been investigated over the last one or two years. Some of them have been suspended because of court orders but they were lifted. In the days to come more files will be forwarded to DPP which also carry similar weight,” Waqo told the committee sitting at Parliament.

The EACC boss declined to disclose their names saying it would jeopardize the process.

“We would not let you know the names because it will prejudice the matter. We can only tell you when we take them to court,” he said, adding that “the commission is monitoring 20 sitting governors.”

Speculation is rife with names of three governors facing arrest over alleged corrupt deals , those alleged to be dragged to Court are;

Sospeter Ojamoong – Busia
Cprian Awiti – Homa Bay
Immediate former Nandi or Bomet governor
PS Muraguri is also in the list following the Afya house scandal of 2016
among others

They include a governor from Western Kenya who is accused of corruptly acquiring property worth over Sh220 million and benefiting from a Sh91 million street lighting project.

He is also accused of misappropriating funds meant for the construction of Early Childhood Development (ECD) projects.

PROCUREMENT

The second governor from Nyanza is facing numerous charges. In one case, he is accused of buying cars worth Sh159 million when the tender committee approved only Sh89 million.

He is also accused of buying air tickets for his family members, relatives and politicians contrary to clear procurement procedures.

According to EACC, the county government paid business class tickets for the governor and his wife, his son, four daughters, nieces, nephews, cousins and MCAs on several occasions yet they were not employees of the county.

The governor is accused of paying air travel bills worth Sh885,000 for an MP from his county.

The county also spent Sh141 million in violation of procurement procedures, through single sourcing for services like insurance and internet services.

A former governor of a Rift Valley county is also facing arrest for among others awarding tenders without bids, in some cases without any retention bonds as provided in law for such contracts.

EACC says the governor sanctioned the purchase of eight Ford vehicles for county executives without following procurement procedures. He is further accused of fuelling county cars in a petrol station that did not have a supply contract with the county.

EACC further claims that there were no LPO’s, requisition, fuel registers, or detailed orders and delivery notes to monitor the fuel consumption by the county government.

One of the two principal secretaries is accused of flouting procurement rules in his previous station.

The PS was in the eye of a scandal last year and was moved to another key ministry when President Kenyatta reconstituted the government after elections.

The second PS is also serving his second term in the ministry that has also been rocked by corruption allegations. Senate is still investigating some of them.

The three commissioners of independent commissions are accused of using official cars to conduct personal business, faking mileage claims and failing to account for imprest given to them.

A former MP from the Coast is accused of misappropriating more than Sh2 million meant for the CDF. He is also facing a second count of abuse of office.

APPROVAL

The EACC chiefs told the Senate committee chaired by Nandi senator Cherargei Kiprotich that they will arrest those affected as soon as the DPP approves the charges.

Waqo told the committee that most of the allegations being investigated relate to procurement. He said since 2013, the commission has taken 342 cases to court out of which 34 have been concluded.

“We secured 30 convictions and four were acquitted,” he said.

In 2016/17, the commission says it traced assets worth Sh4.9 billion which were acquired illegally or were unexplained.

“The commission has enhanced financial investigations and recovery of assets acquired from corruption as a deterrence strategy. This is achieved through proactive disruptions and robust prosecution of recovery cases,” he said.

Waqo blamed the Judiciary for liberally issuing orders and injunctions in corruption cases involving high profile individuals, thus hampering EACC’s work.

He said the special anti-corruption magistrates are insufficient to deal expeditiously with cases of corruption and economic crimes.

“Courts have in some instances issued orders whose effect is to prohibit the investigative aspect or prosecution into corruption and economic crimes. Some of the orders issued in Constitutional petitions and judicial review applications have stalled other cases,” he told the committee.

He added: “There are only two judges appointed to the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Division of the High Court. In addition, the judges and magistrates dealing with corruption cases are also allocated other cases as well. There are also frequent transfers in between the hearing of cases.”

SMALL FISH

Senators including Mutula Kilonzo Jr (Makueni) Amos Wako (Busia) and Mithika Linturi (Meru) sought to know why they appear to be “only targeting the small fish”.

Linturi early this year obtained court orders stopping investigations against him over his degree saga.

Mutula said Kenyans are frustrated with how EACC is dealing with corruption, hence the apathy.

“There is a feeling that the commission should be disbanded. You are not working; why should we have faith in you? Media is working much better than you. We have lost the war on corruption because of EACC and we are extremely frustrated and tired,” Mutula said.

Wabukala, however, defended the commission, saying it is working in synergy with other authorities in fighting corruption.

Waqo admitted that EACC had been sidelined in the investigation of the second National Youth Service scandal.

Uhuru Rewards Ex NTV Anchor Winnie Mukami For 2017 Campaigns Support Role

Comedian Vincent Mwasia Mutua known by his stage name as as Chipukeezy has been appointed to the board of the National Authority for Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA).

Interior and Co-ordination of National Government Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i appointed the entertainer together with George Ogola to join the board of the unit tasked with fighting drug abuse in the country.

“In exercise of powers conferred by section 6 (1) of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse Act, the Cabinet Secretary, Interior and Co-ordination of National Government appoints – under paragraph (h) Vincent Mwasia Mutua to be a member of NACADA,” read part of the gazette notice of Tuesday, June 5.

According to the notice, Chipukeezy’s appointment was effective from Wednesday, June 6 and he will serve for three years. Musician and current MP of Starehe Charles Njagua Kanyi alias Jaguar once served on the same board. Jaguar who was appointed via a gazette notice published on Monday, April 27, 2015 is remembered for blowing the whistle over alleged corruption dealings at NACADA.

In another celebrity appointment, Petroleum and Mining Cabinet Secretary John Munyes appointed former NTV anchor Winnie Mukami to the board of Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC). Ms Mukami’s appointment is seen a s a reward for her backstage role in coordinating some elements of Uhuru’s communication team in the 2017 general election. She was alleged to have worked closely with among others KTN’s Alex Chamwanda and blogger Gordon Opiyo and the famed Cambridge Analytica crew.

The appointment of the scribe comes a few days after President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Citizen TV anchor Kanze Dena as the deputy of the Presidential Strategic Communication Unit. “In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (e) of the State Corporations Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Petroleum and Mining appoints Jinaro Kibet, Rita Achieng Okuthe, Winnie Mukami to be members of the Board of Kenya Pipeline Company,” read the gazette notice published on Wednesday, June 5.

She will serve in the position for three years from Thursday, June 6. Winnie is a super soul and we wish her the best in serving the great people of our republic just like rest of the team.
