  • Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Wednesday, February 15, claimed that police raided Jubilee Party headquarters to intimidate Azimio members.

Speaking to the media, Raila stated that police were used to interfere with the activities of political parties.

Raila claimed that there was an intention of creating a single political party and forcing out his supporters.

“Today police officers went and invaded the headquarters of the Jubilee party and took over the offices there. Meaning that they are trying to destroy Jubilee.

“This is basically the intention of taking this country back to a single-party dictatorship. They want to undermine the opposition, kill the opposition so that they create one monolith,” the former premier added.

The ODM chief added that Jubilee officials were not given a chance to respond to a letter issued to the registrar of the political parties by a section of members of the Jubilee party claiming that the meeting they had with President William Ruto was properly convened.

“The police are being used to try and interfere with political parties. You know that some other members of our party Jubilee had defected to Kenya Kwanza and stated that they were no longer going to be part of Azimo.

“Now the same people went and stated that they were taking over the latter to the registrar of political parties to say that the meeting was properly convened but that matter itself has not been concluded,” Raila added.

The Azimio leader further stated that if the country went back to a single-party dictatorship, it would be in serious danger.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties confirmed that the ouster of Kioni and his fellow leaders loyal to the Azimio Coalition was legal.

The Registrar declined to approve a request by Kioni’s faction to declare the meeting convened on Friday, February 10, and its resolutions to reconstitute the party’s leadership null.

Instead, Anne Nderitu directed the two parties to exhaust the dispute solving mechanisms within the party before issuing a report on the resolutions.
