Politics of the day featured part of the national prayers event convened at the Nyayo Stadium on Tuesday, February 14 as President William Ruto told off his critics for doubting the practicality of his “bottom-up economic model”.
Ruto used the Biblical story of Nehemiah, likening his detractors to Sanballat and Tobias who mocked the prophet during the construction of the Wall of Jerusalem.
In his speech, the President noted affirmed that his economic model anchored in the manifesto titled the “Plan” will eventually pay as it was the case in the story of Nehemiah who succeeded in constructing the wall.
Ruto urged his supporters to shun the detractors and reminded them of the triumph of the Biblical Prophet in his role, likening it to his current endeavor of revitalizing the economy.
“When Nehemiah was constructing the Wall of Jerusalem a man named Sanballat and Tobias, two men with an ego used to mock him that a fox would knock the wall. Let the Sanballat and Tobias continue with their mockery, Kenya will make progress either way,” Ruto noted while quoting the Bible.
Further, the President revisited his victory in the 2022 General election when he overcame a formidable opposition from his political namesis Raila Odinga, noting that the ‘deep state,” threats were neutralized by divine powers.
Ruto also testified that the government had managed to slow down on international borrowing and was looking forward to open more doors for investors and international partners.
“We had accumulated too much reckless debt. We will pay our debt and make the country debt-free because we want to leave an inheritance for our children’s children Today we have opened the door to savings in our nation,” he stated.
“I want to say without fear of any contradiction, it is not by the power of the ‘deep state nor by the might of the system, it is by the power and the spirit of God that this nation is going to move from this level to the next level,” he added.
The President reaffirmed that the bottom-up plan was anchored on Biblical principles and was confident that his administration would realize the set objectives.
He was happy that the government had acknowledged the place of prayers in governance and prosperity of the nation. The Tuesday prayers were organized to intercede for rainfall and an end to the drought that had ravaged several parts of the country.
Ruto’s remarks came at time his government was at the center of pressure piled by the opposition faction and the rising cost of food commodities. The opposition wing Azimio castigated Ruto’s administration for failing to lower the price of unga and other commodities as promised during the campaigns.
