  • In a bid to promote good behavior in a group of reformed smugglers in Busia County, the county and national government awarded them a Ksh3.2 million van.

According to the county officials, the group had also formed a company that has provided employment to the youth.

The team re-invented itself as investors with an investment company that will boost the county’s economy.

Following the establishment of the company, Governor Paul Otuoma urged investors to tap into the industry.

“I urge all investors to open new chapters in the county to help reduce the poverty level which stands at 83 per cent,” he stated.

While handing over the car to the group, Busia County Commissioner Kipchumba Ruto noted that the ex-criminals have reduced idleness in the streets.

“I am delighted that you have changed from smugglers to investors and have come with a security firm to empower youths hence reducing idleness in the streets,” he stated.

Also in attendance was the county governor, who affirmed that the council was in high gear to contain radical and smuggling activities.

Furthermore, the SMEs Principal Secretary (PS)  Susan Mang’eni, lauded the group for changing its ways to serve the community.

“We as the national government are ready to work hand in hand with the county government in order to support them in every way,” she added.

Reportedly, the group was known to cause political chaos during rallies.

According to reports, Busia and Malaba are among the leading border towns in the smuggling of goods and illegal immigrants from Uganda.
