  • President William Ruto lauded Azimio Chief Raila Odinga for holding his Government accountable amid a debate over the planned countrywide engagement fora.

Speaking in Nyandarua on Sunday, December 11, Ruto went on record commending the opposition, which is headed by the former Prime Minister, for pressuring his administration to deliver its promises to Kenyans.

He maintained that for taxpayers to get value from any government, there needed to be accountability from his staff.

“We are doing our best to deliver and so is the opposition. We have no qualms with them doing what they are doing as long as it is guided by patriotism,” Ruto remarked.

The President also defended his push to create the office of the Leader of Opposition explaining that it was in the best interest of Kenyans.

“We want our oversight institutions including the opposition to be empowered so that they ensure that public resources are used appropriately.

“I believe in an administration that is held accountable because it is the only kind that will bring transformation,” he remarked.

Ruto’s directive to Kenya Kwanza members of Parliament (MPs) to table a bill to create the office of the opposition was, however, met with mixed reactions.

As the lawmakers processed the information, the coalition’s leader proposed the two speakers of Parliament requesting an amendment to the gender parity rule.

“A constitutional amendment to be enacted establishing a form to guide the computation of the gender ration based only on elected senators, MPs and Women Representatives,” Ruto’s memo read in part.

The president came under fire with a section of Kenyans accusing him of trying to subvert the rule of law. However, former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president defended him.

“Ruto is within his “bully pulpit” province in requesting Parliament to enact laws for effective implementation of the Constitution in particular, on the two-thirds gender principle: Havi declared.
