  • Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Monday, November 28, warned police against harassing Kenyans in the fight against crime.

CS Kindiki, who made an impromptu visit to the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) to assess the security situation, interacted with members of the public who decried being bullied by cops while trying to report crime.

“I want to thank all those who have cooperated with the police by giving information and I want to request our police officers to be humane.

“Our people who have not committed a crime should be treated humanely, with respect because they are the ones who have put us in our offices, but we will have no discussion will criminals,” the CS reiterated.

Kindiki rubbished calls to have the General Service Unit (GSU) and Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) officers deployed to the CBD to tackle crime withdrawn.

He revealed that more plain-clothes officers were deployed to compliment the security agents patrolling the city and would remain stationed on a long-term basis.

The Interior boss noted that while the crime levels had dropped following the changes in the security command, a few criminals were still conducting attacks on residents.

“We cannot surrender this city to criminals and the government will not allow criminals to run roughshod.

“If you think you have enough weapons to counter the government, I want to assure you that you have dialled the wrong number. We will fish you out of your hideouts,” Kindiki beckoned.

Since the change in police command, several criminals have been arrested in multiple crackdowns within Nairobi.

Among those nabbed is the armed robber who stabbed a university student Keagan Githua in Ridgeways and the bodaboda rider who ferried him from the scene.

The murderer was traced to Githurai by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Meanwhile, in Embakasi, a machete-wielding gang of suspected thieves was nabbed by security officers.
