  • The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday, November 23, revealed that they are working on two special units to help curb crime in the country.

DCI is already in the process of recruiting a special team of marksmen from the General Service Unit (GSU) and the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU).

These special units will strategically be stationed around the country to deal with specialised criminal activities.

“It’s a normal reorganisation of the services, however, special units have special duties,” Amin noted.

The units are being formed on the request of the new DCI boss Amin Mohammed.

Amin requested both the Deputy Inspector General in charge of the Administration and Police Service to shortlist 50 candidates from both GSU and ASTU.

The names of the potential candidates will be forwarded to the respective units’ headquarters for screening.

“The units are not meant to destroy but to protect, that is what the police does,” Amin reassured.

According to Amin, the shortlisted officers should not be older than 40 years of age, and must not have any disciplinary issues.

The candidates are also required to have served at their units for a minimum of five years before joining the special unit.

The formation of the two specialised units comes just few weeks after disbandment of Special Service Unit (SSU) and days after dissolution of Anti-Counterfeit Unit (ACU).

The SSU and ACU were formed by the former DCI boss George Kinoti who was resigned and redeployed to public service.

The Special Service Unit was disbanded in October 2022 after it emerged that its members participated in the abduction and disappearance of two Indian nationals who were working for President William Ruto’s campaign team.

The two Indians went missing on July 25 after they were abducted outside a popular Nairobi hotel alongside their taxi driver Nicodemus Mwania.

DCI Amin on Tuesday, November 22, announced the disbandment of the Anti-counterfeit Unit that was formed in 2018.

Officers from the Anti-counterfeit Unit were transferred to various units across the country.
