KRA Commissioner General Resigns

  • The Kenya Revenue Authority Board, on Thursday, February 23, announced the resignation of James Githii Mburu as Commissioner General. 

    In his resignation letter, Mburu stated that he resigned to pursue personal interests.

    “Following the resignation, the board has appointed Rispah Simiyu (EBS), the Acting Commissioner General KRA, with effect from February, 23, 2023, until the position is substantively and competitively filled.

    “The Board appreciates Mr Mburu for the service he has rendered to KRA and the Republic of Kenya and wishes him very well in his future endeavours,” the statement read.

    Mburu resigned from office before the end of his 5-year term, which was expected in June 2024 following an ammendment of the KRA Act. 

    Other changes made to enhance the revenue mobilisation agenda further and synergies were as follows. 

    1. Pamela Ahago was appointed the Acting Commissioner Domestic Taxes. 

    2. David Mwangi, the Acting Commissioner Customs and Border Control. 

    3. David Yego, the Commissioner in charge of Intelligence, Strategic Operations, Investigation and Enforcement,

    4. Nancy Ng’etich, the Acting Commissioner Corporate Support Services.

    5. Dr. Mohammed Omar remained as Commissioner Strategy Innovation and Risk Management. 

    6. Dr. Fred Mugambi Mwirigi maintained his Commissioner Kenya School Revenue Administration position. 

    7. Mr. Paul Matuku remained Commissioner Legal Services and Board Mi Coordination Board Chairman.

    Mburu’s resignation comes months after he was appointed the Vice Chairman of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax purposes. 

    Mburu assumed the role in November 2022 in Seville, Spain, where he also chaired the 12th Africa Initiative meeting.
