  • A video of a man stealing a TV set on the streets in broad daylight elicited debate among Kenyans who questioned how it was possible to go unnoticed despite a sea of pedestrians.

In the video captured by CCTV cameras mounted along the street, the man is seen stealthily following another man ferrying boxed TV sets on a trolley.

The suspect slides out of one of the TV sets and walks a few steps forward before quickly getting into a tuk-tuk that drives away.

However, the man carrying the other TV on a trolley was oblivious to what had happened while those in the vicinity complicitly failed to raise an alarm.

According to the footage, the incident occurred on February 8, 2023, at 11.17 am.

A google reverse search by Kenyans.co.ke on the video showed that it was first posted on February 10, 2023, with the caption “How’s that” in Sinhala, a common language used by a tribe in Sri Lanka. The Facebook account that first posted the video is also based in Sri Lanka.

The video was shared widely by Kenyans who pinpointed how fast the heist occurred without anyone raising an alarm.

Others were outraged at how the culprit pretended to help the man but ended up stealing from him. They added that the man pushing the trolley will be forced to pay for the loss.

“That is bad. So the trolley guy has to explain or even pay for something he has no idea where it went to? Dangerous streets,” one lamented.

Meanwhile, to avoid such cases, some urged Kenyans to be careful while in the city streets emphasising, “Be smart or you will be outsmarted.”

Others speculated that the man and the tuk-tuk driver were in cohorts based on how quickly he was available to ferry the suspect.

Other tuktuks, a common mode of transport in Sri Lanka, are also seen in the video’s background moving about. There are about 1 million tuktuks in the South Asian nation.
