Ksh 1M Monthly Salary – Report Reveals Kenya's Highest Paying Construction Jobs

  • Interior designers and town planners were among the highest-paid technicians in the construction industry with a number of professionals taking home a monthly salary of up to Ksh1 million.

    According to the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK)’s 2022 Salary Survey, 17 per cent of interior designers with over 30 years of experience pocketed Ksh1 million in salaries per month.

    However, other designers earned between Ksh100,000 to Ksh600,000.

    Interior Designers

    43 per cent of interior designers with 5 – 10 years of experience earned between Ksh100,000 to Ksh200,000, followed by 29 per cent who earned a maximum of Ksh100,000.

    “Most experts with 21 – 30 years of experience earn between Ksh100,000 to Ksh200,000 and Ksh400,000 – Ksh500,000, both recording 33 per cent each.

    “For the same position, other salary rates were Ksh0 – 100,000 at 17 per cent and Ksh500,000 to Ksh 600,000 also at 17 per cent,” read the report in part.

    Town Planners

    Town planners with over 30 years of experience were also top earners taking home millions at the end of every month.

    “The remuneration ranges for professionals with over 30 years of experience are 33 per cent earning between Ksh200,000 to Ksh300,000, 33 per cent earned between Ksh600,000 and Ksh700,000, 17 per cent took home between Ksh900,000 and Ksh1 million with 17 per cent earning above Ksh1,000,000.

    “Firms use multiple parameters to determine the wages for experts. All planning firms confirmed that they base salaries on years of experience, while 83 per cent also consider academic qualifications,” read the report in part.

    Architects 

    The majority of architects earned between Ksh100,000 to 200,000 per month. However, some of them with over 21 years of experience took home Ksh800,000 and above.

    Most architects below five years of experience were the least earners with 34 per cent in this category earning between Ksh60,000 to Ksh80,000.

    Land Architects

    On the other hand, land architects took home between Ksh20,000 to Ksh30,000.

    However, they enjoyed other benefits including airtime, bonuses, club membership, health insurance, pension and housing allowance

    Quantity Surveyors  

    The highest-paid quantity surveyors earned between Ksh700,000 to Ksh800,000. The majority of the top earners were those with over 30 years of work experience. 

    Professionals with less than five years of experience were the least paid in this category as they took home a minimum of Ksh60,000 to Ksh80,000.

    “Firms had several benefits for their members. Health insurance recorded the highest among companies at 31 per cent followed by bonuses at 25 per cent and memberships in professional associations at 14 per cent,” read the report in part.

    Engineers

    Top earners in the industry took home a salary between Ksh500,000 not Ksh600,000 with the majority having over 30 years of experience in the field.

    40 per cent of experts with 21-30 years of experience earned a gross pay between Ksh100,000 to Ksh200,000.

    The least paid in this category took home between Ksh20,000 to Ksh40,000

    ‘Most entities review their salary remunerations annually, while 20 per cent indicated that salary review is done randomly depending on business performance. It is noteworthy that per cent of firms do not review remuneration at all,’ read the report in part.
