  • As the deadline for form one admission comes to a close, Petronilla Mutono will be smiling her way to secondary school after the Nairobi County Government awarded her scholarship.

In a statement, Nairobi Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri revealed that the scholarship dubbed as ‘Executive’ will see Mutono through her entire four-year period in high school.

“Petronilla Mutono performed excellently in last year’s KCPE examinations. She scored 419 marks to emerge as the top student in Embakasi South,

“Today, it was a great honour to award her a 4yr Executive scholarship that will cover her secondary school education,” he disclosed.

Her scholarship came a day after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna pledged to finance her education. He had asked that together with her family, they visit his offices at KICC room 301 for assistance.

Mutono who was the overall best student in Embakasi South after scoring 419 marks was to miss joining school due to her parent’s inability to afford school fees.

Her father Kennedy Mutono was at pains seeing her daughter still at home while other students had joined various schools.

His plea in the media led to her daughter getting help.

Mutono was to be admitted at St. Theresa Girls in Mbooni and disclosed that her goal was to be a journalist in future.

“I really want to study but I foresee myself repeating class as the deadline for admission is on Monday, February 13. I want to be a journalist like Lulu Hassan,” she stated.

The executive scholarship was launched on January 15 by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja who announced that his administration had increased bursaries for deserving students across all wards in the capital.

“Get all candidates who sat for KCPE and performed well, getting above 350 marks, I will not give them bursaries for one term, I will sponsor them from Form One to Form Four. That is scholarship,” he stated.

He indicated that he would release a total of Ksh1.025 billion in both Executive Scholarships and Ward Bursaries.

Each of the 85 Wards would receive Ksh6 million, up from Ksh4.5 million received in 2022, in Ward Bursaries.
