  • A police officer who survived the bandit attack along the Lodwar-Kitale Highway on Saturday, February 11 revealed the ordeal they encountered while countering attacks.

According to the officer, the armed bandits started firing at them indiscriminately from the bushes thereafter stripping the officers before killing them.

The officer in his statement registered under OB 05/11/02/2023 revealed that the officers included the General Service Unit (GSU), the Anti Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), and the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU).

“While at the scene, armed bandits started firing at them aimlessly from the bushes.

From the scene, the officers managed to recover the bodies of three officers who were missing and had succumbed to their injuries,” part of the OB read.

In what was an embarrassing and humiliating act by the bandits, the officers were left lifeless and naked.

“They were stripped naked and their arms and uniforms were stolen,” the survivor documented.

The report further disclosed that three government Land Cruisers that were being used by the officers were deflated by the bandits and were still at the scene of the attack.

“One of the vehicles was been set ablaze and others vandalised due to dangers at the scene the vandalism was not quantified.

The officers retreated to Anti Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) Kainuk together with the bodies to re-strategize but there is an urgent need for air support,” a signal sent out by the police added.

Equally in Laikipia County at Mahua Camp a police officer was shot dead by Pokot bandits who raided the camp.

The police report indicated that more than 20 bandits attacked the camp at around 4 pm on Saturday, February 11, and started shooting at the officers.

“Officers from Kamwenje GSU camp, ASTU Miteta and Ng’arua Police station responded but the bandits had already escaped towards the Baringo Escarpment,” the report read.

This latest incident comes hours after Interior CS Kithure Kindiki held a meeting with senior security commanders from Turkana and Baringo counties.

He had visited the volatile region in an effort to find a lasting solution to perennial banditry attacks that have increased over time.
