  • A team of seven doctors performed one-of-a-kind brain surgery at the Kenya University of Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH).

The team of neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists, and lab managers managed to save the patient from traveling abroad for the delicate brain surgery.

In a statement dated Friday, February 10, the hospital stated that the team had conducted endovascular neurosurgery on a patient who had suffered a brain aneurysm.

This type of brain aneurysm is a bulge in a blood vessel in the brain and presents with stroke-like syndromes. Often, it can leak or rupture and result in bleeding in the brain.

According to the doctors, the surgery was preceded by a unique scan known as a digital subtraction angiogram (DSA).

Doctors reported that the patient recovered successfully.

“The challenge with patients with a cerebral aneurysm is that the treatment centers are only found in Nairobi, leaving patients in far-out areas challenged for treatment,” stated Dr Daniel Kanyatta, the lead neurosurgeon.

He added that the hospital was working on investing in more advanced and modern neurosurgery procedures that can be found in more developed countries.

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha lauded the progress by the hospital and using DSA, a state-of-art technology.

“Congratulations to the team at the hospital for employing state-of-the-art technology – the Digital Subtraction Angiogram (DSA), the gold standard for diagnosing cerebral aneurysms – and for conducting endovascular neurosurgery on a patient who had suffered a brain aneurysm,” she stated.

In April 2022, the hospital performed the first open heart surgery on two patients, this was another milestone in the medical field.

In August 2022, the hospital introduced the Cyberknife treatment for cancer patients. The Cyberknife is a set to revolutionise cancer treatment not only in Kenya but also in the region, it is the second of its kind in Africa after Egypt.
