  • Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed that the government was introducing new road features along Thika Superhighway to enforce traffic laws compliance and curb accidents.

Appearing before the National Assembly committee on transport on Wednesday, December 7, Murkomen indicated that four footbridges would be erected along the highway.

He explained that this would give pedestrians safer options for crossing the busy road.

The sections selected for the footbridge project include Juja High point Stage near Centurion Hotel and Kihunguro section.

Other areas to get footbridges are Juja Mona Park Area, and Clay works around Northlands Area

“Installation of road signs and improved marking of road bumps has been done to enhance the safety of road users in order to encourage pedestrians to use the footbridges consistently,” he stated.

Additionally, he divulged that the footbridges would be lit to encourage the public to use them.

Other measures taken include the fencing of the section of the road which is aimed at preventing pedestrians from crossing at undesignated areas.

Murkomen added that various road agencies would also work with transport stakeholders to enforce the pickup and drop-off points along the highway.

“Already, the Kenya National Highway Highways Authority (KeNHA) and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) have made preparations to jointly conduct more public sensitizations regarding the proper use of roads to avoid endangering lives.

“Other programs include installation of road signs and improved marking of road bumps has been done to enhance the safety of road users,” he stated.

Murkomen made the revelation after Ruiri Member of Parliament Simon King’ara sought to know what initiatives the government had taken to save the lives that were being lost on the highway through accidents.
