  • President William Ruto, on Wednesday, December 7, commissioned the Ksh20 billion Mavoko affordable housing project.

During the launch of the project, which is being undertaken in partnership with UN-Habitat, Ruto stated that the affordable housing project valued at Ksh20 billion will have all facilities.

Among the facilities the homeowners are set to enjoy include modern shopping markets, well equipped medical centre and a school.

The affordable housing project, where Kenyans will be allowed to purchase over 3,000 units, will also have a police station, tarmacked roads and proper water and sewerage system.

“We will have a number of facilities here. We will have a school, modern market, hospital and we shall ensure that all other amenities are available so that used by those who will occupy houses here,” Ruto stated.

According to the head of state, the houses will have green spaces making them environmentally friendly.

“This project here will comprise so many things. We have agreed as the government to ensure all projects are climate compliant,” Ruto stated.

“This project will have green spaces to meet the demands of Kenyans who will buy these affordable houses,” Ruto added.

Ruto assured residents that his administration had struck a deal to acquire more land for the project to expand and make the estate all-inclusive.

Given the uniqueness of the project, which will be on 55 acres and women will be the main contractors for the project.

Machakos residents will also be employed as labourers to help the government set up modern houses, which will then be sold to Kenyans at affordable rates.

“We have said 40 per cent of that Ksh20 billion will be set aside for suppliers and the locals involved in construction. This will be the first project where women contractors will be given priority,” Ruto insisted.
