  • An officer in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) detailed how he received Ksh2.4 million from six young Kenyans who wanted to be recruited into the Kenya Prisons in early 2022.

The KDF officer based at the Lanet Barracks confessed before the court how he played a middleman, reportedly passing the bribe to a relative of the alleged mastermind to facilitate the recruitment of the six.

In his affidavit, he further claimed that the money was allegedly distributed to senior police officers to process recruitment letters in what turned out to be a scam.

He, however, had a hard time trying to substantiate his claims of meeting the accused thrice in Nairobi.

He further confirmed to the court that the recruitment letters were found to have been forged at the Kiganjo Police Training College.

In an apparent bid to distance himself from any wrongdoing, he argued that he gave all the money and did not negotiate for a commission.

Conclusively, the prosecution promised the court to provide testimonies from the guardians of the six conned young Kenyans who raised the money.

Defence lawyers, in their argument, accused the KDF officer of lying to the court.

They argued that he was one of the larger cartels within the KDF that fleeces unsuspecting young Kenyans with the pretext of helping them join the disciplined forces.

The case will be mentioned on February 28, 2023.

In the recent past, KDF and National Police Service (NPS) warned Kenyans against bribing officers to land recruitment slots.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), also embarked on a manhunt for scammers. DCI urged applicants to vet agencies and agents offering jobs, and also cross-check with companies’ official websites.
