  • Following the sad news of the passing away of former Standard Media Group journalist, Evelyne Mong’ina Ogutu, journalists contributed Ksh2 million for her funeral and to aid her widower in raising their twins.

Her family and friends also joined hands to give her a befitting send-off on her funeral scheduled for Saturday, November 26.

Ogutu passed away after delivering twins through the cesarean section on Friday, November 11, at a city hospital.

A source close to the family noted most of the money raised is to help the husband raise the twins and three other children.

Ogutu was married to veteran journalist and editor David Okwemba who served as a regional editor at British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and investigations editor at the Star.

“You were my cheerleader and inspired me in ways I cannot explain. When things were tight, and I was groping in the dark, you shone your light to open a new world,” Okwemba stated in her eulogy.

In her eulogy, her two sons shared emotional tributes noting how warm, loving, and supportive their mother was before her demise.

“You opened my third eye, you taught me well. Every time I look around me, the colour is so bright. I still remember the late-night chats, the shopping sprees, and how we’d pray with the rosary at the end of the week,” narrated one of the sons.

“We will always remember that you were always present any time we needed you. When you realised my passion was football you enrolled me in a soccer club and ensured I never missed my practices. You were an amazing man,” stated the other.

The Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) graduate was described as a devoted friend and mentor in the industry.

In the media industry, she will be remembered for her role in the inception of the Instinct and Eve Woman publications.

She was eulogised in the words of Maya Angelou, stating, “A great soul serves everyone all the time.

“A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.”

Her body will be ferried on Friday, November 25, to Simatwet in Kitale, Trans Nzoia county, for burial.
