  • A businessman in Uasin Gishu is counting his blessings after police repulsed robbers caught conducting a night-time robbery.

The officers acted on a tip-off from a neighbour who heard a commotion into the neighbouring gas-cylinder store on the night of Sunday, November 20, at around 2:00 a.m.

When he checked, he saw silhouette-figures of individuals getting in and out of the store which prompted him to call the police.

When the officers arrived at Sabugo stores, they directed the six thugs to step out but they resisted resulting in a tussle at the door.

After a few minutes of push and pull, the door opened and the thugs attempted to attack the police officers which prompted one of them to open fire.

“Upon arrival, the officers who did not waste time ordered the robbers who had locked themselves in the shop out. But the robbers defied the orders prompting the officers to push the door in an attempt to open it. The determined robbers pushed the door from inside in retaliation, prompting a push and pull contest that lasted for some minutes before the thugs finally ran out of steam and the officers stormed inside.

“In the ensuing melee, two of the suspects attacked the officers with machetes prompting one of the officers to open fire at the thugs and immobilised one of them,” read the statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in part.

Five of the robbers escaped as the officers escorted their injured accomplice to hospital.

During the incident, the robbers failed to make away with anything as their robbery mission was nipped in the bud by the officers.

The attack came on the backdrop of a heightened police operation across the country after a recent spike in criminal activities with Nairobi being the most affected region.

As a measure to mitigate the crime, President William Ruto deployed both uniformed and non-uniformed police officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) as well as Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU).

The police also cautioned Kenyans from sharing CCTV footage of people being mugged before verifying its source.
