How to easily make scones at home with few ingredients

-

Scones are a type of bread made with leavened barley flour or oatmeal that is rolled into a round shape and mostly cut into quarters before baking.

It is eaten for breakfast as an alternative option to bread. Sometimes it is served as a side dish with soup as a starter.

You can easily bake them at home as it only requires readily available ingredients such as flour and eggs.

Baking at home allows you to experiment with a personalized touch of additional ingredients.

You can eat them warm from the oven or cold with a cup of tea or plain.

Ingredients

  •  1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  •  2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chilled, unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or milk
  •  One big egg
  •  Dried fruit, chocolate chips, almonds.

Step 1

Line a baking sheet on the baking tray and preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined to make dough. Always ensure to use cold, cubed butter to ensure the butter doesn’t melt before the scones are baked.

Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Some larger pea-sized pieces of butter are okay.

Step 3

Mix the wet ingredients: Whisk the egg and the milk (or cream) together thoroughly in another bowl.

Step 4

Mix the dry and wet ingredients: After adding the wet components to the dry ingredients, stir until mixed. Take care not to overmix, as this may result in very firm scones.

Step 5

At this point, carefully mix any optional ingredients—like chocolate chips, almonds, or dried fruits into the dough.

Step 6

After transferring the dough to a surface dusted with flour, give it a few gentle kneads until it comes together. Gently pat the dough roughly one-inch thick circle.

Step 7

Depending on your preference, cut the dough into rounds or wedges using a sharp knife or a biscuit cutter.

Step 8

After arranging the scones on the prepared baking sheet, transfer them to the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the tops become golden brown.

Step 9

After baking, move the scones to a cooling rack and allow them to cool before serving.

Savor your freshly baked scones warm with jam.
