  • The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) opened a public portal for Kenyans across the country to monitor presidential results in real-time.

    The Commission granted access to the portal to tame misinformation and misrepresentation of facts and promote transparency in a cutthroat presidential contest.

    The portal was opened shortly after the Wafula Chebukati-led commission closed voting in all polling centres at 5 pm following a 12-hour exercise, with a few exceptions where delays were witnessed during the day.

    How To Check;

    The portal has all the 48 counties where anyone can check per county how the four presidential candidates are performing.

    Notably, the portal has the diaspora which is considered the 48th county, even though less than 5,000 Kenyans living abroad voted in the last election.

    Data shows that at least three million Kenyans live in different countries around the world.

    On the portal, the counties are arranged alphabetically with Baringo at the top while West Pokot comes last.

    It also shows the number of votes counted per county against the registered voters and the Reported forms 34A.

    Those interested in following the results can also search a specific county or polling station within the portal.

    Under the county, IEBC further breaks down results from different constituencies to the wards.

    This year’s General Election attracted a low voter turnout with only 12,065,803 registered voters, out of 22,120,458 having cast their votes by 4 pm, Tuesday, August 9, according to IEBC.

    Commissioner Francis Wanderi estimated that the final turnout would be around 60 per cent, which would be one of the lowest in the country’s voting history.

    Wafula Chebukati-led Commission blamed the saga involving three Venezuelans for the botched backup plan it had for KIEMS kits.

    Speaking during a media briefing at the Bomas of Kenya, IEBC CEO Hussein Marjan lamented that the confiscation of the stickers found in possession of the Venezuelans led to the grounding of kits in the commission’s warehouse.

    Consequently, the electoral body had to label the kits afresh causing a delay in the dispatch of some of the crucial gadgets.

    “We had a challenge in logistics and it was brought about due to delays in dispatching them. As you remember, some of the kits were held in our warehouse because of the issue of the stickers. That might have contributed to that,” Marjan explained.

    (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has confirmed Marjan Hussein Marjan as the new CEO on Wednesday, March 9, 2022.
