  • Ex-Citizen TV Journalist Evelyn Wambui was a ball of emotions as she painfully recalled covering the horrific story of the quack Mugo Wairimu, who was on November 21, sentenced to 29 years in prison, after being found guilty of running an illegal clinic and drugging patients.

Mugo was reported to have administered controlled drugs to his patients and later preyed and took advantage of them.

Wambui who lifted the lid off the matter expressed her relief following the judgement delivered by the courts, albeit seven years later.

She took a stroll down memory lane, sharing a conversation she recently had with the respondent.

“Got off the phone with the 29-year-old lady we interviewed 7 years ago for the Dr. Mugo wa Wairimu expose, she’s 36 years now and finally breathing a sigh of relief. I asked how she feels about the sentencing  and her reply humbled me.” The veteran journalist narrated.

The former features reporter who was famed for covering human-interest stories and delivering thought provoking news pieces was elated that her story had impact.

“It may have been a long road but here we are, the victory is ours to celebrate. I’m relieved, justice may have been delayed but it wasn’t denied, finally! I’m sending love and light to everyone else who was a victim of Mugo, may we all find peace. May we all finally heal.” One of Mugo’s victims proclaimed.

“I still can’t put to words how I feel myself, this story was difficult to document. We actually almost didn’t do it with all its complexities but I’m glad we did!  I’m glad we bravely followed through and were not deterred by the threats and intimidation,” Wambui recounted.

Wambui also took noted of Africa Uncensored John-Allan Namu’s reaction to the verdict, who appreciated the remarkable work that was put in, in telling the story.

“For those journalists who toil not knowing whether their work has impact, be encouraged,” Namu tweeted after the judgment.

Milimani Law Courts chief magistrate Wendy Muchemi who delivered the sentence, cited that Mugo was a danger to society and hence should be kept away for a long time.

“He is a danger to society. Instead of using the skills he acquired as a trained nurse he went out of his way to endanger the lives of women by purporting to be a gynaecologist where he sedated the victims and probably raped them,” she ruled .

Mugo was however, acquitted of charges of raping his patients and unlawfully hiring students to work with him at his medical facility due to lack of evidence.
