  • President William Ruto’s Lands CS Nominee Zacharia Njeru was on Wednesday, October 19, hard-pressed over a 2012 accident he was involved in.

Leader of the Minority in the National Assembly Opiyo Wandayi first raised the matter questioning Njeru’s judgement over events preceding the crash.

He argued that in the case, which was adjudicated by Justice James Wakiaga, Njeru was found to have caused the accident.

“In my search, I came across a matter here in the Court of Appeal. Zachariah Mwangi Njeru (appellant) vs Joseph Wachira Kanoga. This is a matter that was adjudicated upon and a judgement entered into by Justice J Wakiaga.

“In this matter, you were found to have caused a serious road accident which occasioned serious injuries under some very unclear circumstances. could that have been informed by your poor sense of judgement?” He questioned.

In his response, the nominee admitted that the accident took place while he was leaving his wife’s graduation ceremony.

He argued that the road was suddenly blocked near Nanyuki which led the crash.

“About the accident of 2012, It is true I was involved in an accident and what I want to assure the members through the chair is that I was coming from the graduation of my wife from Meru.

“Past Nanyuki, somebody just closed the road and the accident occurred,” he stated.

Wachira had filed the suit at the Court of Appeal accusing Njeru of negligence that led to the accident along the Nanyuki-Naromoru highway.

The nominee had, at the time, also accused Wachira of negligence.

In his judgement, Wakiaga found that both parties were equally liable for the accident and awarded Ksh400,000 damages alongside Ksh400,000 as future medical costs.

During his vetting, Njeru also declared his net worth at Ksh80 million and vowed to work closely with other qualified employees in the Ministry to rid it of cartels.
