Winnie Odinga, the daughter to ODM Party leader Raila Odinga has vowed to start online teaching to help students revise, in line with what Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is doing.

In a statement on her social media pages, she faulted the government’s directive that only vetted and approved personnel should deliver online lessons and promised to start some of her own.

“Nonsense. It’s taken you years to figure out online learning na bado umeshindwa (and you are yet to get any breakthroughs). Let those who do, do [sic]. And those who can’t, teach.

“With that being said, I shall start online teaching soon. English and History were my subjects. But be fairly warned, my history classes may differ drastically from the curriculum. You may fail the exam but you will win in the knowledge of the truth,” Winnie wrote.

Education PS Bellio Kipsang, addressing the National Assembly on Thursday, May 7, reiterated that anyone offering education online must be registered by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

“I would want to confirm to members of the National Assembly that whatever mode of delivery of the curriculum, it is all anchored by KICD which says that all materials going to our children must undergo vetting by KICD.

“This includes lessons and materials delivered online that have to be approved by the KICD and all those delivering the content must be teachers registered by the Teachers Service Commission,” he stated.

Winnie Odinga, however, stated that Kipsang’s words were part of a ploy by the government to fight every activity being conducted by Kenyans online.

She took the example of the explicit program that saw blogger Arthur Mandela (Xtian Dela) summoned to the DCI headquarters as one of the affronts by the government towards online content.

“Club Covid wamekataa (they have rejected Club Covid), online learning wanakataa (and now they are rejecting online learning). What do these dinosaurs want us to do online? Just watch churches being streamed and sing hymns? No way. The future will be digitized!” she stated.

Winnie added that she would keep fighting for the country’s digital future and insisted that Kenyans should not be attacked for the activities they do online given that the activities are within the legal parameters.

If she indeed follows through on the vow to launch the online classes, she will have joined Babu Owino who vowed to defy the directive and conducted revision for Chemistry through his social media platforms a day after Kipsang’s warnings.
