  • Many Kenyans who looked forward to watching the latest episode of Churchill Show on Sunday, August 9 were left disappointed after the show was postponed.

An announcement by the host, Daniel ‘Churchill’ Ndambuki of his regret that the show would not be airing sparked questions from fans on what had occasioned the postponement.

The comedian confirmed that it was because “Baba (Raila) was speaking”, referencing a highly-anticipated interview with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga that was scheduled to air at the same time as his show.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic saw large gatherings banned, Churchill had introduced a new ‘Journey‘ series focusing on the personal stories of some of the country’s top comedians.

Among comedians and actors who had appeared on the series so far are Wilbroda, Chipukeezy and Olexander Josphat.

Raila’s interview on NTV was scheduled to begin airing at 7.30 p.m, after the Swahili news.

Hours before the broadcast began, it was already sparking debate being the first interview the ODM leader was giving since his return from Dubai for what was described as a minor back surgery.

Kenyans pressed him to address a myriad of issues in the interview, not least of all the controversial third basis revenue allocation formula.

Raila, who initially voiced support for the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA) formula which prioritizes population in distributing revenue to counties, withdrew his support stating that he was not aware it had been changed by MPs.

The opposition leader called for a new formula to be crafted to ensure that no county loses out in terms of the allocations from the national government.

A section of leaders from the Coast, in particular, had threatened to walk out of ODM if the party did not oppose the formula.

Critics of the formula have argued that it will leave historically marginalized counties, particularly in North Eastern and the Coast, to suffer even more neglect.

A stand-off in the Senate has seen calls grow for consultations to find a middle ground on the issue.
