  • CCTV footage emerged on Thursday, August 13 of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team nabbing notorious fraudsters in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

The fraudsters were arrested on Sunday, August 2 posing as Mobile Service Providers and Pay TV employees to solicit money from unsuspecting Kenyans.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), revealed that the fraudsters used a range of merchandise including electronic goods and laptops they purported to be promoting or selling.

In the video, an Administration Police (AP) vehicle ambushed the fraudsters who had a large crowd gathered around their vehicle.

It took some few seconds before the crowd realised the presence of the Special Team before fleeing the scene with the fraudsters also trying to blend into the crowd by running.

The AP vehicle then moved to block the fraudster’s vehicle as the team moved to arrest the con artists who failed to escape.

“Three Notorious Fraudsters who were arrested along Moi Avenue in Nairobi by SSU detectives in collaboration with other multi-agency teams have been charged with conspiracy to defraud contrary to section 317 of the Penal Code,” read a statement from DCI.

The three notorious fraudsters were identified as Jeremiah Murimi Mwaura, Victoria Muthoni Mutunga and Albert Oyugi Ayumbo.

Some of the fraudsters managed to escape the sting operations set by the Special Unit with one being arrested by DCI on Thursday, August 13 after appeals from the public.

A branded car was used by the con artists with DCI also recovering assorted mobile phones, T-shirts among other items were recovered from them.

The gang managed to defraud a number of Kenyans by strategically parking the vehicle along busy corners of the CBD, especially at Tea Room on Mfangano Street next to Sizzling Hotel and around Globe Cinema round-about.
