  • Award-winning Citizen TV news anchor Victoria Rubadiri is back in the country after an extensive training at the giant British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) headquarters in London.

Detailing her experience for the past three months, the news anchor lauded the work ethics and commitment embodied in the London-based media company.

A key highlight for the journalist was the urgency filled within the newsroom in order to churn out content on a 24 hour basis.

“Getting to see the BBC machine at work from the inside was surreal. The energy and urgency of a newsroom running for 24 hours was incredible to experience. I learned a lot and even contributed some insights,” she stated.

In the course that lasted three months, Rubadiri worked on a feature in the Democratic Republic of Congo where she covered the plight of passengers in Kinshasa.

At the time, kidnapping cases had become rampant and a major concern among a majority of the citizens.

She mainly highlighted the resolve of two female entrepreneurs who were working on a mobile application in order to improve passenger safety.

The journalist noted that the new skills would be an important addition into her media career as she sets to put what she learnt into practice at Royal Media Services.

“It’s great to be back with a fresh perspective on the news and how and why we cover the people and events that we do,†she noted.

Victoria landed the training program after winning the 2020 Komla Dumor Award. The annual award was created to honour Ghanaian broadcaster and BBC World News presenter Komla Dumor, who died in 2014.

Journalists from across the continent are invited to apply for the award, which aims to uncover and promote talent from Africa.

Among the pieces that Rubadiri submitted for the award included her feature on ‘Nairobi by bike’, which entailed the essence of a non-motorised transport system to curb Nairobi’s depressing traffic.

She was the second Kenyan to clinch the award. In 2018 her colleague, Waihiga Mwaura triumphed over other journalists from around Africa to emerge the first Kenyan journalist to win the Komla Dumor Award.
