President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, October 16, commissioned the much-awaited Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)-Westlands expressway.
The 18.586km super-project is set to begin at JKIA all the way to James Gichuru Road in Westlands aimed at decongesting the busy roads that characterised by traffic congestion.
The construction will be undertaken by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis.
Motorists who would like to escape traffic will be allowed to use the expressway for a fee. Using the bottom deck will however be free.
The toll charges are meant to help the CRBC recover its investment.
Another special feature of the anticipated road is a 32km the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, that will run from Athi River to James Gichuru Road.
It will allow for a special lane solely dedicated to large-capacity buses to ease congestion. It will consist of 16 stations three of which will be underground.
The expressway will be elevated near Ole Sereni Hotel through the City Center along Uhuru highway up to James Gichuru junction.
It is to be built in three phases beginning with the first 6.5km running from JKIA to Likoni Road and the Southern Bypass interchange.
There will be multiple interchanges at intersections on Popo-Kapiti, Lang’ata-Lusaka, Bunyala, Rhapta and James Gichuru roads.
