  • President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, November 25, tore into the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over the recent claims surrounding the revival of the 2007 Post Election Violence (PEV) cases.

Once he was done with his formal speech during the signature collection launch for the BBI Report, the President immediately turned his attention to the investigative agency, and blasted it over recent remarks made by DCI boss George Kinoti.

Wale ambao wanajaribu kuchimbua makaburi. Nilisoma kwa gazeti juzi… wasifikiri wanacheza, mimi siwezi kukubaliana na mambo kama hayo (Those trying to exhume bodies we buried in the past. I read it in  the papers the other day. This is not a joke and I cannot agree to such).

Tumetoka huko na mambo hayo tumezika katika kaburi asahau.. kwa sababu ukijaribu kuleta maneno hapa wewe hujui ni shida gani… watu wengine hawafikirii (We settled those issues back then and buried them. When you try to revive such matters you just don’t know what will happen. Some people just don’t think). You don’t think before you talk, you don’t think before you act… you must always think,” the President asserted.

In his address, the Head of State made it clear that he was not aware of DCI Kinoti’s statements before hand and emphasised on the need for people in such crucial positions to exercise some forethought before addressing the media.

Deputy President William Ruto’s allies had come out guns blazing and accusing the DCI boss of acting at the behest of powerful Jubilee administration operatives out to further personal agendas.

In an earlier statement, the DCI boss shed light on the matter, stating that the agency would not be re-visiting the PEV cases that were resolved by courts.

“I would like to draw the attention of the nation to the misconceptions that the DCI has decided to revisit the PEV cases that happened in 2007/2008. This is not the case,” Kinoti stated.

He explained that the investigative body had recently received complaints from a group of persons who intimated that their lives and property were in danger.

On his part, DP Ruto broke his silence on DCI Kinoti’s move as he detailed how it was bound to cause further divisions between communities.

The Deputy Jubilee Party Leader claimed that recording of new statements from victims of PEV would reverse the gains his new Hustler Movement had gained against tribalism.
