Residents in the village have since rushed to the site to help with the rescue mission.
The walls of the quarry are said to have collapsed at around 10:00 am on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, as the miners were preparing to go about their business for the day.
Joseph Tonui, a resident in the area, told the Standard that the miners buried in the quarry had gone in first, and those who were yet to enter the quarry witnessed the whole incident.
“We are not sure the number of those trapped inside but we are told they could be more than three people because they always wake up as early as 6:00 am to start work,” Tonui is quoted as saying.
“We are currently using our hands and spades to dig up the rubble but we are hoping that a machine that can do it faster will be deployed,” he added.
Bomet County disaster management officer Stanley Mutai revealed that a team has been deployed to the site to aid in the rescue mission.
Villagers who have since flocked the scene, have embarked on rescuing the trapped miners alongside local authorities who made their way to the quarry.
The incident happens barely two weeks after three children drowned while playing near a flooded quarry in Mukinyai village, Molo.
The siblings died while they attempted to rescue each other from drowning in the quarry.
The children, identified as Grace Wairimu, 15, Victor Kaniaru, 11, and Michael Kiritu, 8, were all pupils at Mukinyai Primary School.
Reports indicated that Kaniaru drowned as he made an attempt to rescue their younger brother, Kiritu from the dreadful waters. Chief Munari further revealed that Wairimu, who was the eldest, drowned trying to rescue her two brothers.
