  • As Kenyans prepare to head to the 2022 General Election, an interesting story of diversity will be unfolding as former Thika Member of Parliament Alice Ng’ang’a and her sister, Bernadette Wangui Ng’ang’a, are major cogs in different political camps.

Alice is in Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) while her sister, Wangui, is allied to the Azimio la Umoja under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) bracket.

The former Thika MP was previously in the Jubilee camp as a parliamentary aspirant in the 2017 election. She, however, lost to an independent candidate Patrick Wainaina in an area touted as the Jubilee’s bedroom.

Alice remained out of the political limelight after the elections, until a UDA rally held in Kiganjo, Thika where she joined Ruto to announce her affiliation with the party.

“I am now officially in UDA and I’m ready to seek re-election as the MP for Thika. I will be returning here to ensure that our children from impoverished families get an education like we used to do when I was in power,” she stated during the rally.

She has since accompanied the Deputy President in various rallies across the Central region.

On the other hand, her sister, Wangui, unsuccessfully sought the Jubilee ticket in the 2017 Nairobi Woman Rep race. She also served as the Vice-chair of The Service Party (TSP) before ditching the camp to join ODM in November 2021.

“I have found a new home, today is a big day. Raila has been our leader here in Nairobi. As women, we have said we will stand with Azimio la Umoja,” she stated during the rally.

Wangui has also in the past indicated that her sister is her mentor in politics though currently, they will be in different political camps.

Aside from Alice and her sister, other siblings have thrown their hats in the ring in the upcoming elections.

Media personality Mwanaisha Chidzuga and her brother Hassan Chidzuga will be contesting for the Matugu parliamentary seat.

Emgwen MP Alex Kosgey will look to become the Nandi senator while his brother, Allan Kosgey, is eyeing the county’s Gubernatorial seat.

Sons of former Cabinet Minister Fred Gumo, Pius and Michael Gumo, will be seeking to contest for the Endebess Ward Member of County Assembly and Westlands Parliamentary seat respectively.
