  • Nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege challenged President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua in leading the country in humility.

Speaking during an interview with Inooro TV on Sunday, February 19, Chege challenged Ruto and Gachagua to focus on their duties as the country’s leaders and stop blaming former president Uhuru Kenyatta.

She told the duo to emulate the late retired president Mwai Kibaki who left a legacy by developing the country without blaming the previous regime of the late Daniel Moi.

“Ruto and Gachagua should do away with the blame game. They were elected to head the country and it is high time this sinks into them. If they continue looking at the side mirror, then they will never move forward. They should focus on building the future,” she advised.

The lawmaker urged Kenyans to respect the head of state as he had also promised to serve  everyone despite the previous differences.

She further noted that during the state house meeting with Ruto, he announced that he had forgiven everyone who wronged him.

Addressing the issue of the handshake, Chege argued that Ruto’s handshake with the opposition was different from Uhuru’s deal with ODM leader Raila Odinga in March 2018.

“I agree that there is a soft handshake but the difference is that the previous handshake was between two people who locked themselves in a room we are not even aware of what they talked about, but today’s handshake we are doing it openly as leaders,” she explained.

The former Murang’a women representative called on Uhuru to stand firm by the Jubilee party before it fizzles out.

Dismissing claims of dissolving the opposition by Ruto, Chege stated that there were no plans to dissolve any party.

“We want Uhuru to tell us what he wants with this party. We look like orphans. We saw him on a truck in Kisumu while we have been looking for him all this time. We want him to call us and stop neglecting us as we also stood by him. At no time did we forsake him. The scuffles in Jubilee are happening because he has left us alone and we lack someone to hold our hand,” she added.

She revealed that during the August 2022 general election, she had been offered a slot to run as Nairobi deputy governor but declined the offer because she did not want to betray Uhuru.

“I know he is listening to me or watching me right now and I want to tell him to come and build our house. Stop watching us suffer. The peace you are preaching in DRC do it even here with your friend Raila,” she addressed the former head of state.

Chege noted that their focus was to have the party stand firm and under their leader as it was happening in other political formations.

“We want Jubilee to be recognized as a party. Most of us members failed for vying with the Jubilee party. I am sure if I vied with United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket today I could be sitting in a very powerful position.

Jubilee lacks a strong foundation. We failed to work on the party’s grassroots that’s why most of the members failed. Our elected members have never met our party leader.

Even the troubled secretary general Jeremiah Kioni has never called for any meeting. When you see him attending the rallies, he does not represent the party but he attends as an individual

ODM has been taking all the slots until am forced to ask Kioni whether we have also become part of ODM,” she expounded.

Commenting on the threat from Kioni on losing the Deputy Minority Whip Position, Chege noted that she would not hesitate to surrender if the party felt they wanted to replace her with someone else.

“I have no problem with losing the position. If Jubilee feels they want to give it to someone else, I will be okay. It was not a favor to get the seat. I never got the deputy minority whip because of my beauty or physical feature but it’s because I sacrificed a lot for the party, there is no need to send threats to me,” she added.

Speaking on Wednesday, February 15, when interim officials of Jubilee stormed the party’s headquarters, Chege revealed that she was being targeted because of her decision to work with the government.

“There are bloggers who are being paid Ksh2,500 per day to malign my name but I tell them to take care because they do not know where we will meet tomorrow,” she lamented.
