Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on Saturday, April 18, surprised residents of Mukuru Kayaba slums with gifts.

The governor, who came under heavy criticism for donating Hennessy (a type of brandy made in Cognac, France) as part of his free foodstuff hamper, resorted to donating money, hand sanitizers and masks to the residents.

In a video posted on the governor’s social media pages, some members of his team are seen holding bundles of cash, which they distribute to the residents.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko addresses a press conference on Tuesday, April 14, 2020.

Daily Mail

“Today we’re we are working with people from Mukuru Kayaba slums. Instead of distributing foodstuff, we are giving our people something they can use to cater to their needs,” he stated.

The residents each receiveD masks and money of an unknown amount.

The governor is constantly heard asking residents to maintain social distancing, warning that those who do not obey the directive will not receive the gifts.

Sonko’s donations came days after he donated Hennessy in his foodstuff hamper, irking some players, the manufacturer of the drink as well as the international community who read cheekiness in his act.

“I will be giving out small bottles of Hennessy in the food packs, I think from the research conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), it has been revealed that alcohol plays a very major role in killing the coronavirus.

“If you inspect any sanitizer and check the alcohol content, you’ll find this to be true,” he explained.

However, the Hennessy Kenya General Manager, Anne-Claire Delamere, issued a statement discrediting the assertion that the French brandy was effective in combating Covid-19.

“Hennessy would like to stress that the consumption of our brand or any other alcoholic beverage does not protect against the virus,” she stated.

In a previous press briefing, President Uhuru Kenyatta asked Kenyans to limit the use of cash during their transactions as one of the means of curbing the spread on the dreaded coronavirus (Covid-19) in the country.

He requested Kenyans to use cashless transactions.
