  • Since birth, President Uhuru Kenyatta has only known a life of privilege ranging from prestigious high schools, high-ranking colleges to living at State House, Nairobi.

Since joining St Mary’s School in Nairobi while in Grade 3, Uhuru and his brother Muhoho Kenyatta were chauffeured to school in high-end Mercedes Benz cars with private number plates.

A former schoolmate of the President noted that Uhuru and his siblings were, however, also taught how to interact with other common students.

They would open their own doors, carry their own bags to class, attend the assembly with other students and queue for lunch.

For the Head of State, nonetheless, this changed when he joined the upper Sixth Grade at the age of 16 years. His father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta gifted him his first car.

Uhuru drove a cream Mercedes Benz E Class with the number plate KWT 185.

“Saints students were allowed to drive and park their personal cars in school, once they reached upper 6th. Uhuru was no exception,” Uhuru’s former classmate Charles Ouko recalled, in a past interview with The Standard.

Uhuru’s former driver Mugo Karuga added that the incumbent President enjoyed his school holiday breaks and had quite lived a normal life just like other children.

Reports indicate that at some point, he would sneak out in his car to hang out with his then-girlfriend and current First Lady, Margaret Kenyatta.

“Uhuru and his good friend Jimmy Kibaki (former President Mwai Kibaki’s son) both espied their future brides while at St. Marys School.

“First Lady Margaret Kenyatta née Gaul and Sheryl Kibaki née Vienna were students at Msongari. Margaret is of Kenyan and German extraction, while Sheryl is of Goan extraction,” reminisced Ouko.

While in school, Uhuru was also an easy-going individual with an outgoing personality, enjoyed playing rugby and rose to be the sport’s representative in the school.

He maintained a close relationship with some of his friends from High School including Jimmy Kibaki and cousin, Jeff Koinange.
