Ruto’s Political Tactics: Hustlers System Vs Nyayo, Harambee

  • Deputy President William has picked new trends along his political careers as prepares to battle it out in the 2022 presidential race. The DP has seemingly borrowed a leaf from the late Presidents Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Moi.

Ruto says nothing will derail him from his political ambitions including the so-called deep state, argusing that he was ready to counter any opposition by marshalling the support of hustlers (mwananchi) and God.

Hustler system is a phrase coined to represent the everyday Kenyanman with analyst Herman Manyora, stating that it is the hustler who has borne the brunt of joblessness and questionble foreign policy by current and previous regimes.

    Ruto’s Philosophy (Hustler System)

The DP uses the hustler system to speak against dynasties which he argues are fighting against him with an aim of barring him from ascending into presidency.

“I know, I am aware, and it is obvious that there is a huge scheme that has been orchestrated to demean and destroy my office and to ensure that I do not get anywhere,†Ruto stated in March 2020.

Ruto is famous for traversing churches and interacting with women and youth accross the country selling the hope of his hustler system. His allies have also numerously stated that ordinary Kenyans will propel him to the presidency after state machinery isolated him from the government.

The DP has embodied the hustler philosophy similar to how Mzee Moi held old to Nyayoism. Moi used Nyayoism to embody peace, love and unity as a development philosophy – literally following in the footsteps of founding President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

Jomo Kenyatta’s philosophy was Harambe – literally meaning pulling together – a rallying call for all Kenyans to come together and join hands to build the young republic. It would culminate in an Harambee culture wwith one of its most ensuring legacies being Harambee schools, a term that is seldom used in recent times.

    The Baton

Fimbo ya Nyayo as it was famously known, was a symbol of authority for Mzee Moi.

Mzee Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga are known for having their fly-whisks.

When Moi passed away in February 2020, the baton was passed on to his son Gideon Moi. Analysts argued that it was a symbol of power for the younger Moi and a signal that he was poised to lead Rift Valley and also succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Ever since Gideon Moi has strategised himself in the political realm with a KANU Jubilee merger.

Ruto would later be gifted with a Nokirwet (a leadership baton) by Talai elders in a controversial meeting in June 2020. According to leaders present at the ceremony, the meeting was meant to prepare the DP ahead of the 2022 election and protect him from bad omens.

    The Walking Stick

DP Ruto was recently spotted with a walking stick while making an address confronting the ‘deep state’ on Tuesday, August 11, somrhing Mzee Jomo always had by his side, albeit, associated with his age.

The first President always walked with his bakora in both official and non-official functions. He also reportedly used to carry it while walking barefoot along the beach in Mombasa.
