Deputy President William Ruto has come to the defence of his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta who was mentioned in a leaked audio between two speakers, one who claimed that certain information had been relayed to the president, to facilitate the release of confiscated gold.
Speaking in Tranzoia County on Saturday, Ruto stated that there was no way Uhuru could have been involved in the scam.
“Those from the opposition who engage in corruption, criminal activities and conmanship should not drag Uhuru’s name. We know our president well and he has plans to take the country forward,” stated the DP.
He noted that political fraudsters had now turned into business fraudsters.
“They boarded planes to Dubai to execute their scam and therefore should answer to the questions raised by themselves without invoking the president’s name,” spoke Ruto.
“We want to be very categorical and that is the way things are going to be,” he added.
The audio that leaked on Friday evening and made rounds on social media also alleged that Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Interior CS Fred Matiang’i were involved in the scam.
Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji, through a statement, condemned the publishing and circulation of the audio.
It is reported that the victim of the scam was taken to a hotel in Karen where he was introduced to a person masquerading as CS Matiang’i.
The DPP directed Police IG Hillary Mutyambai to expedite the investigation into the scandal and forward to him the file within seven days.
The mention of high profile individual has aroused political commentary from leaders and citizens as well.
