  • Deputy President William Ruto was on Monday, October 26, heckled by delegates during the launch of the Building Bridges’ Initiative (BBI) report at The Bomas of Kenya.

Ruto was forced to pause his speech as the delegates jeered him after he appeared to express his disaffection at Trans Nzoia county youth leader Alex Matere’s targeted reference to his wheelbarrow donations.

“I want to thank the bright intelligent young man from Kitale because he said that we should not adopt 16th-century technology. I’m sure he was referring to the wheelbarrow and possibly he was referring to me.

“The question I want to ask is how come in the 21st century, a 16th-century tool still has millions of citizens still dependent on it? That is the discussion we need to have,” noted Ruto.

The comments appeared to rub most of the delegates the wrong with many openly expressing their displeasure at Ruto’s remarks.

Mbita MP Millie Odhiambo appeared particularly angered by the comments as she stood and heckled Ruto, drowning his speech.

The DP then proceeded to ask for a minute to conclude his speech but the crowd continued to heckle him after he appeared to hit out at former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka.

The Deputy President concluded his speech by asking leaders to refrain from contests pitting the rich and the poor and went on to quote former US president Abraham Lincon.

Ruto then proceeded to invite the President to deliver his speech with the delegates chanting “respect the president” as he took his seat.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also threw punches at Ruto for engaging in early campaigns instead of focusing on service delivery.

“We want this to be a unifying process uniting the people of Kenya, once that is done Kenyans will decide who will be the leader in 2022, we don’t want to talk about 2022 now.

“The Jubilee government have their four-point agenda, they should complete that first. Do not tell us what you will do in 2022, do it now and finish it,” noted Raila.

Raila added that Ruto and President Uhuru Kenyatta are working as a pair and issued an analogy of the duo having a mentally ill child but later failing to own it.
