The youth hurled stones at UDA party officials as they addressed members of the public as they drummed up support for their their Senatorial candidate Urbanus Ngengele.
UDA Chairperson Johnstone Muthama and former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko led several other leaders in campaigning for Ngengele in the region.
The UDA leaders condemned the incident, urging Kenyans to avoid getting involved in violence at the expense of political mileage. They urged the residents to uphold peace amongst themselves.
“Peace in Kenya is important. There are a few people here throwing stones at a gathering. We will bring helmets and give to people, if stone stones are hurled at us, we run towards whoever is throwing them, catch them and hand them over to the police,” Sonko remarked.
The incident adds to the recent cases of political unrest experienced in the country emanating from political rallies.
This came just hours after Members of Parliament Sylvanus Osoro and Simba Arati were involved in a confrontation during the burial of Mzee Abel Gongera, father to Kisii County Deputy Governor Joash Maangi on Monday, February 1.
The two legislators engaged in a fist fight as Deputy President William Ruto and ODM Leader Raila Odinga watched.
The ceremony turned chaotic forcing police officers to intervene.
