  • Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko can now breath easy after the court barred Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) from interrogating him while he is receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.

In the ruling made on Tuesday, February 16, the court directed that the former governor will only face the terror charges labelled against him after he has been discharged from the hospital.

The judge further noted that the governor should be confined in his hospital bed until his health improves.

Sonko was admitted on the morning of Tuesday, February 9, prior to his arraignment at Kiambu Law Courts, where he was expected to answer to assault and robbery with violence charges.

Sources, at the time, claimed that the former Makadara MP had developed stomach complications.

The embattled former county boss is facing terror charges after DCI claimed that he was financing the purchase of firearms and was a leader of a secret militant group.

In a separate case, he was accused of invading private property in May 2019 and assaulted civilians in Buruburu estate.

    Sonko denied all the charges.

At the beginning of February, Sonko was concerned with the frequent visits of officials and claimed that at some point, someone allegedly attempted to inject him with an unknown substance in cell.

Through his lawyers John Khaminwa, Assa Nyakundi, and Wilfred Nyamu, the former county boss claimed he was being tortured psychologically by some of the police officers.

Sonko is also facing another charge where he is alleged to have demanded Ksh10 million from a private company to facilitate payment from the County Government of Nairobi.

The matter was adjourned and mention set for February 26, 2020, at 2 p.m.
