A luxury vehicle linked to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, was on Wednesday, October 9, seized by Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers.
The Range Rover registration KCS 002D, was part of 18 other high-end vehicles that were seized over a fraudulent registration claims, The Standard reported.
According to the latest reports, the DCI had uncovered a total of 444 cars that were either stolen or acquired fraudulently by evading the taxman.
” A list of the attached vehicles are circulated in order to have them traced and detailed. The motor vehicles are suspected to have been fraudulently registered and they’re therefore unaccustomed since taxes in their regard have not been paid,” officer Peter Kiboro of the DCI KRA unit stated.
However, the officers were unclear as to whether the Range Rover was registered under Raila’s name or under one of his many supporters, who often allow him to use their cars during his campaigns.
Research results at the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) were inconclusive.
Devolution Cabinet Secretary, Eugene Wamalwa Range Rover was also flagged by the Kenya Revenue Authority alongside other luxury vehicles linked to Jubilee MPs Mathias Robi, Maoka Maore, Purity Ngirici and George Theuri.
Other politicians nabbed in the latest crackdown were Steve Mbogo, former West Mugirango MP James Gesami and former Kasipul legislator Oyugi Magwanga.
Out of the staggering 444 cars under probe, there 64 Range Rovers, 94 Mercedes Benz, 224 Toyotas, 22 Nissans, 1 Porsche, 26 Subarus, 4 Volkswagens and 2 Volvos.
KRA commissioner James Mburu vowed to intensify the crackdown on individuals out to cheat the taxman.
