  • Azimio la Umoja presidential contender, Raila Odinga, on Saturday, August 27, called off a 7-day planned vigil at Supreme Court and Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices countrywide.

The former Prime Minister relayed the information through Azimio la Umoja Director of Communications, Dennis Onsarigo.

In a statement, Onsarigo explained that the decision to cancel the vigil was reached at after consultations with the alliance’s top leadership.

The Communications Director, however, maintained that plans to hold a Church service were still intact.

“We have cancelled the earlier plans after consulting widely with the senior party officials.

“The church service will, however, stand as we had told our supporters. We urge them to join us for the church service in Kibra,” stated Onsarigo.

The statement further advised Azimio la Umoja supporters to stay home and follow the proceedings either online or on TV.

“Our supporters are advised to watch the proceedings of the Supreme Court from the comfort of their homes when the court commences hearings,” read the statement signed by Onsarigo.

Initially, the alliance had planned to attend a Church Service at the AIC Olympic in Kibra beginning at 11 am before holding a rally at Kamukunji Grounds where further instructions on the 7-day vigil would be given.

The vigil had been scheduled to begin on Monday, August 29, in preparations of the hearing of a petition filed by the former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, challenging the election of his main rival, William Ruto, as the fifth President of Kenya.

“All Azimio leaders including MCAs are hereby requested to gather at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation offices in Nairobi county starting 9 am on 28th, August 2022 for a briefing,” an initial statement by Azimio la Umoja read in part.

Raila is seeking to be declared president-elect or have the Supreme Court declare a run-off between the top two.
