An unidentified man who on Sunday, October 6, was allegedly heard racially abusing security officers and passersby at Nairobi’s Lavington Mall was apprehended on Monday.

A post shared by Deputy President William Ruto’s close aide, Dennis Itumbi showing the man standing next to his consulate-issued car went viral.

“This gentleman a few minutes ago was insulting guards at Nairobi’s Lavington Mall. A concerned lady whose only interest was to protect the good name of your organization tried to calm him down and he dismissed her as a F****** Monkey,” Itumbi posted.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) acknowledged that he was indeed one of their staff members, going on to add that they would take the necessary action.

“Thanks Itumbi for bringing this to attention. We confirm that this is our staff and vehicle. We do not condone insulting behaviour and racism by our staff. We are investigating the matter and will take the necessary action. Apologies to those involved,” ICRC posted on their official twitter page.

The non-governmental organization have since confirmed that the employee’s contract in Kenya had been terminated.

“Today, we met with witnesses as part of our investigation. As of this evening, the persons’ assignment in Kenya has been terminated,” read an excerpt of their statement.

Netizens were quick to point out that the non-governmental organization were unclear in their statement, leaving room for interpretation that painted the entire organization in a bad light.

“Wait a minute. Is his employment with ICRC terminated or just his assignment in Kenya? If he remains an employee with your organisation then you are making it clear that ICRC is not committed to providing a hate-free workplace/service,” Toro Chero posted.

ICRC, on their part, lauded everyone who had stepped forward to shame their employee over his unacceptable actions.

“The ICRC has a long presence in Kenya, one that has been made possible by our relationships with the public, Kenya authorities, our partners at the Kenya Red Cross, our dedicated staff and above all, the communities we are here to serve,” the humanitarian aid organization stated.
