  • Pwani Oil Products Limited has stated that its four cooking oil brands suspended by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) are safe for consumption following a series of tests conducted to prove the same.

In a statement dated Saturday, September 24, the cooking oil company acknowledged that KEBS has raised concerns over some of its products which failed to meet standards set by the regulatory body.

The company immediately embarked on ascertaining the safety of the products as had been instructed by KEBS.

Pwani oil products that had been banned included Fresh Fri, Fresh Fri with Garlic Oil, Fry mate and Salit.

“We responded immediately indicating our corrective action plan for those specific batches stated which included, product isolation and withdrawal and samples to be sent for retesting to KEBS’ accredited laboratory.

“As we continue to follow through on the isolation of the product, the product samples were sent to SGS and the results received from the independent and KEBS accredited laboratory confirm compliance to fortified edible oil and fats specification in iron levels,” the company stated.

Further, they allayed any fears among Kenyans who were using their product expressing that the matter with KEBS will be addressed soon.

“Our manufacturing process for edible oils and fats has always adhered to the best industry practices regarding receipt and storage of raw materials, in-process monitoring, product quality control, and storage of the final product and this quality standard applies to the four products

“We are ready to follow the process of testing to the satisfaction of KEBS and are willing to work with them to bring this process to its rightful conclusion and reassure our consumers that our products are safe for consumption,” he stated.

The statement by Pwani oil comes a day after KEBS suspended 10 cooking oil products after carrying out a quality check.

While insisting that it had not banned the products, the regulatory body called for the withdrawal of some products over health concerns.

The other cooking oil brands that had been suspended – including Bahari Fry, Gold and Pure Olive Gold, Postman, Rina, Tilly and Top Fry – are yet to issue a response.
