  • Kenya’s history would be incomplete without a chapter on the country’s third President Mwai Kibaki. From his early days as an Executive Officer of the Kenya African National Union (KANU) to when he became Head of State in 2002, he achieved a lot that caught many by surprise, especially in the political arena.

Kibaki will be remembered for being one of the suavest politicians, engaging in the country’s politics for over 50 years and rebuilding Kenya’s economy when it was on the edge of collapsing.

Unknown to many, Kibaki’s wit and crafty nature dated back to his earlier years in Mang’u High school as fondly told by his schoolmates.

During his time at the prestigious National School, the President schooled alongside other politicians who went on to establish prominent careers. kenyagist.com takes a look at some of these politicians, who shared classes, dinning halls, and hostels with the late President.

    Former Kamukunji MP George Thenge

The late Kamukunji George Thenge is remembered for playing a key role in entrenching democracy in the country during the struggle for independence.

Known as a close confidant to Kibaki, Thenge was a year ahead of the late president at Mang’u High school. He revealed in a past interview that in 1948, he saved Kibaki from being bullied as the new students went through the unorthodox initiation.

Standing up against his form two mates, he became a favourite for the late president as they became close friends.
Thenge passed away in August 2021 at the age of 94 years.

    Tom Mboya

Known for being a principled leader that agitated for the country’s independence, Mboya’s achievements are engraved in the annuls of history. He is remembered for championing Kenyans’ rights and advocating for equal opportunities. Mboya was a Pan-Africanist who stood out from the pack. For this reason, the powers that be during early days of Kenya’s post-independence became unsettled – Mboya was assassinated.

In 1946, Mboya joined Mang’u High (previously known as the Holy Ghost College) where he met prominent leaders such as Kibaki and Archbishop John Njenga. After attaining his Cambridge School Certificate, he later went to the Royal Sanitary Institute’s Medical Training School.

    Moody Awori

Former Vice President, Moody Awori, forged a close relationship with Kibaki back in Mang’u High school during their era. Their chemistry transcended the political space as they worked together in ensuring Kibaki succeeds former President Daniel Arap Moi.

He was appointed as the Minister for Foreign Affairs before taking over as Kibaki’s Vice- President with the synonymous words: “Hapa iko Kazi” in reference to the vacant VP slot.

After his demise, Awori eulogised his boss the late Mwai Kibaki as a patient man who was fit for leading the country at the right time.

“He was a remarkable and likable person. Any good things that need to be said about a person should be said about Kibaki,” he recently stated.

    John Michuki

One thing that comes to mind when the name Michuki is mentioned is the reforms that he made in the matatu industry as the Minister for Transport.

He is yet another iconic figure who studied at the same time as Kibaki for his A-levels. The Murang’a native has held various positions in government, including the Minister for Internal Security as well as the minister of roads and public works.

    George Muhoho

Former Cabinet Minister and longtime KAA Chairman, Muhoho has been a staple in various industries. Apart from his interests in education and insurance, he is also the founder and longtime chairman of Kenya’s second-largest bank.

Muhoho also attended Mang’u High school at the same time as Kibaki.

Other notable politicians who attended the prestigious school include billionaire and politician Zedekiah Kiprop Bundotich, popularly known as Buzeki, Cyrus Jirongo, businessman Joseph Wanjui, and Kenya’s longest serving Attorney General, Amos Wako.
