With just three months to her graduation from the University of Nairobi, 22-year-old Lucy Ng’endo was ecstatic about the culmination of four years of hard work and zeal to attain a degree in environmental science.
She was set to turn a year older on Wednesday, October 19- the proverbial icing on the cake of the jovial student’s life. However, in what can only be described as murder most foul, her life was cut short after her body was found lying in a pool of blood at her apartment in Uthiru, Kiambu county, this past week on Wednesday.
Police officers privy to the matter told Nation that a phone conversation between Ng’endo and her best friend, Violet Matena turned out to be her last.
At 9.48 am on Wednesday, Ng’endo called Matena asking for a phone charger as her phone was about to go off. The two friends were slated to attend a burial in Machakos in the afternoon.
The duo agreed to meet at 2 pm to head to the burial. At around 2 pm, Matena who lives in the same apartment in Uthiru attempted to call Ng’endo to no avail.
Frantically pacing that her friend may be in trouble, Matena contacted Ng’endo’s boyfriend for the spare keys and an hour later, he dropped them at a designated place. Much to her dismay, Matena found her best friend lying in a pool of blood.
“I called her numerous times before I tried to open the door but she did not respond. When I unlocked the door at around 4 pm, I found her lying in a pool of blood,” Matena intimated to Nation.Africa
Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that Ng’endo was killed by people she knew very well. According to DCI detective Simon Chege, Ng’endo innocently opened the door to her attackers who ensnared the student to her demise.
Further, her mother, Esther Waitathu, who lives in the United Kingdom, noted that her daughter had not expressed any fears about her life. She urged police officers to expedite investigations to bring the culprits to book.
“I would describe her as kind-hearted and outgoing and she was looking forward to finishing her degree and graduating this year,’’ she stated.
