  • Pakistani Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, on Tuesday, October 25, ordered the formation of a commission to investigate the murder of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif.

Reuters reported that Islamabad would institute a high-level commission to ensure transparency in the process of unearthing the cause of the journalist’s death.

However, the Prime Minister did not clarify the jurisdiction of the commission.

“I have decided that we will form a high-level judicial commission to investigate the matter, and will put in a request for an Islamabad High Court judge for this,” the Prime Minister stated.

On Tuesday, October 25, the government of Kenya facilitated the repatriation of the Sharif’s remains to Pakistani.

This followed a phone conversation between President William Ruto and the Pakistani leader where they agreed to fast-track the journalist’s burial in line with Islam traditions.

In addition, the government of Pakistan urged Kenya to conduct credible investigations.

The prominent Pakistani journalist was shot on Sunday, October 23, after police reportedly engaged the car, he was travelling in on a car chase.

Notably, fresh details emerged on Tuesday, October 25, indicating that the vehicle that was reported to have been carjacked was a white Mercedes and not the Toyota Landcruiser pursued by the police officers.

Sharif, renowned for his investigative journalism pieces, was filming a feature article in Kenya.

He was reportedly living in Kenya after fleeing his country in August 2022 for safety reasons.

The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) committed to probing the matter amid heightened cases of extra-judicial killings.
