  • As the country continues to be ravaged by the more lethal third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has unveiled a plan to avert the crisis.

In a statement on Thursday, March 25, the service run by General Mohammed Badi unveiled 21 centers around the city that would begin offering Covid-19 vaccines.

The service further noted that the administration would follow protocol with frontline workers getting the jab first.

“NMS has received Covid-19 Vaccine from MOH (Ministry of Health) and distributed to the facilities below for Phase One of the exercise for Front Line Workers: Medical Practitioners, Teachers and law enforcement Officers. If in this category visit the facilities with your job card,” read the statement in part.

The new centers are located in Langata/kibra (4), Westlands (4), Starehe (2), Kasarani (2), Makadara (3), Ruaraka (2), Dagoretti (6) while Embakasi East, Embakasi West and Kamukunji have one each.

This comes even as individuals both in Kenya and the African continent express concerns over the new Covid-19 vaccines.

According to a report released by the Partnership for Evidence-Based Response to Covid-19 (PERC) Consortium, only two-thirds of Africans are willing to take the Covid-19 vaccine.

In the 19 member countries surveyed, 91% of the people surveyed in Morocco were most interested in receiving the vaccines while Tunisia and Cameroon had the lowest number of people, at 35%.

The report disclosed levels of acceptability in other countries as follows; South Africa (61%), Zimbabwe (61%), Zambia (53%), Mozambique (75%), Egypt (78%), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (52%).

The PERC consortium is made up of public health organizations such as the Africa Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention; Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative of Vital Strategies; the World Health Organization; the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team; the World Economic Forum and private sector firms such as market research company, Ipsos.

In Kenya, some skeptical individuals have demanded that politicians and senior government officials get the jab first to ascertain its legitimacy. Several politicians and health care workers have since been vaccinated.
