The staffer in the health department and his co-accused will be detained for two days as investigations into the matter are conducted.
Their arrest comes a day after Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital Chief Executive Officer Emma Mutio alongside Regina Musembi, an administrator at the hospital, and a junior officer Makallah Fred Leparan were arraigned in court after they were arrested over the same.
The trio, however, did not plead to any charges as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations sought 10 days to detain them pending further investigations.
The illegal dealings in the hospital were brought to light by a BBC Africa’s exposé, dubbed the Baby Stealers, as it was singled out as a hot spot for child trafficking.
The feature prompted the police to commence investigations and exuded confidence in bringing more suspects to book.
“In the course of the investigations and operations, it is unfortunate that it was realized senior medical officers in collusion with the child smugglers are highly involved,” read part of the statement.
The NPS also urged Kenyans to cooperate with police officers in uncovering the crime syndicate operating in the streets of Nairobi. He noted that collaboration would ensure that the operation would go smoothly.
In the feature, a social worker was caught on camera negotiating to sell a baby to an undercover BBC journalist.
During the court proceedings, Chief Inspector Wanga Masake stated that the suspect gave away three abandoned children for varying amounts of money.
The prosecution further noted that the suspects sold children for amounts ranging between Ksh100,000 and Ksh300,000.
