  • Robbers have developed a new tactic to steal side mirrors and headlights in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) in broad daylight.

The new trick involves two robbers mostly a man and woman who lean on one’s car posing as regular people on the streets and appear to be deep in conversation.

A hawk-eyed Nairobian who sought anonymity on Thursday, November 26 spotted a couple in town trying to apply the same trick on a parked vehicle.

“Watch out for petty side mirror thieves in the CBD especially for the motorists who park along walkways.

“Just seen a lady and a guy leaning on a car pretending to be deep in a conversation while trying to dismantle a side mirror. I raised the alarm and they sprinted away,” said the source.

The incident happened along Kimathi Street with the area emerging as a hot spot for car theft as a number of incidences have been recorded in the street.

With the parking spaces in CBD now limited due to the walkways that have been constructed, cars have been struggling to secure parking.

“The man was leaning on a Subaru with the lady standing just in front of him, he had his hands behind his jacket trying to dismantle the side mirror.

“When I approached him to ask if the car was his, they took off after people walking on the streets started to take note of what was happening,” the source added.

The man and woman were dressed decently to blend well with the crowd and raise no suspicion on to their activities.

Motorists are now appealing to Nairobi Metropolitan Services to utilize the revenue collected from parking fees to beef up security in town and curb theft cases.

Previously, the robbers have posed as parking boys who usually ask for ‘security’ money but NMS has tried to reduce their numbers in CBD.
