Nakuru Accident: Widower Recounts Losing Wife Day Before 31st Anniversary

-

  • A widower is mourning the death of his wife of 31 years, who passed away in a grisly accident along Nakuru-Eldoret Highway on Tuesday, December 13.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, December 14, the heartbroken man, Joe Koech, lamented that his wife passed away just a day before they celebrated their marriage anniversary.

The deceased, a mother of two, was travelling home with her 8-year-old grandson, who also perished.

“We have lost a good mother. We were to celebrate our marriage today since we got married 31 years ago,” grieved Koech.

Another family also lost their 26-year-old campus student travelling home after completing her studies.

Her kin noted that the deceased’s face was damaged beyond recognition, and they could only identify her body through her clothes.

The three were among 10 travellers who lost their lives after a trailer rammed into two passenger service vehicles (PSVs) in the Ngata area of the busy highway.

Photos seen by Kenyans.co.ke from the accident indicated that one of the public service vehicles rammed into was crashed.

Eight individuals lost their lives on the spot, while 10 casualties were rushed to the nearby hospitals to receive medical attention. Two more passed away while receiving treatment.

After the accident, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced three major changes to curb road carnages at the blackspot.

Through a statement dated Tuesday, December 13, Murkomen directed the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to implement safety measures to forestall accidents, especially during this festive season.

He directed KeNHA to install signs that direct motorists to observe lane discipline and enforce the 50 kilometres per hour speed limit on the Nakuru- Salgaa Road.

Law enforcement officers were also deployed on all highways in the country to enhance adherence to traffic rules.

“I have, this evening, instructed the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to immediately implement adequate measures to forestall any such accidents,” Murkomen stated.

“The actions will be for the short term and the long term,” he added.
